What is Somatic Coaching?

“The term somatic derives from the Greek somatikos, which signifies the living, aware, bodily person. It posits that neither mind nor body is separate from the other; both being part of the living process called the soma.” - The Art of Somatic Coaching by Richard Strozzi-Heckler.

The soma is often referred to as the living body in it’s wholeness; Somatic being the art and science of soma. A notion of the mind-body process. Somatic pioneers, Wilhem Reiche, a student of Sigmund Freud and Elsa Gindler, a student of Reiche’s, as well as Moshe Feldenkrais, founder of Functional Integration came to somatics in attempt to heal themselves from an illness or accident that medical science could not help. Through the personal successes of these pioneers in self healing substantiated the idea that by turning the attention to the life of our somas, we have the capacity to generate our own healing.

Through the guidance and assist of a trained Somatic Practitioner, Somatic Coaching includes a unified approach to physical and emotional well-being through connecting the language of the psychological mind into the physical body. A detailed intake and assessment is required to break down the awareness of the clients early childhood developmental characteristic types which gets formulated into an adaptable treatment plan of breathwork exercises, energetic movement techniques, relational work, body language, and Myofascial Release. These guided techniques are used to help move trauma through the body and reintegrate new neural pathways for coping mechanisms within an individuals healing journey.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Somatic Coaching begins with a 90-120 Minute Assessment and detailed intake of history in regards to early childhood development as well as any traumatic events or experiences that have taken place throughout life.

During this assessment period, your practitioner / coach will subjectively and objectively formulate a treatment plan specifically curated towards the clients psychological characteristic types and physical holding patterns. Through the combination of observation and exaggeration of contracted and reversed postures, we find meaning in the movement patterns while assessing the relational patterns of our life story. The practitioner will use a combination of breath work exercises, energetic movement techniques, relational work, and Myofascial Release. The client will be asked to use an internal language while navigating their own breath patterns. It is common to experience waves of sensations, tissue memories and emotional releases during somatic sessions.

Post self-care grounding work is encouraged after each session. All coaching sessions are provided in a private studio setting. Somatic Coaching is not yet recognized within the Massage Therapy Association of Nova Scotia. Coaching sessions do not include a claimable invoice through local insurance companies. To have access to the benefits of somatic integration within your regular booked Massage Therapy sessions, a Somatic Coaching Assessment is recommended for adequate intake of clients history.
